Mustangs Crowned Powerlifting State Champions

ANDREWS, Texas – Friday, March 25, 2023, will forever be etched in the history books. The Andrews High School Powerlifting team clinched the program’s first-ever State Championship with a score of 25 team points during the THSPA Division II State Championship meet. 

 

Senior Indiana Taylor led the Mustangs as he clinched the 181-pound title. He recorded the heaviest total weight of 1,800 pounds, setting a school and state record. His total weight was the most by any lifter in the 181 class across all divisions (1A-6A). Taylor was awarded the Outstanding Total award for the light platform at the state meet. 

 

Taylor’s 690-pound deadlift set a new school and state record. He was awarded the Outstanding Dead Lifter for the light platform following the meet. The senior’s 670-pound back squat and 440-pound bench press also set new school records for the 181 weight division.

 

Taylor now holds eight school records, all four categories in the 165 and 181 weight classes. 

 

Ivan Zamora captured the 132-pound weight class state title. His total weight of 1,320 pounds set a new state and school record. The senior broke his own school records with his 540-pound back squat, 310-pound bench press and 470-pound deadlift. 

 

Senior George Wagner finished second in the 198-pound weight class. He set new school records in three of the four categories, including total weight (1,595 lbs), back squat (620 lbs) and deadlift (605 lbs). His 605-pound deadlift was the heaviest by any lifter in his class. 

 

Seniors Jaxon Lawdermilk and Luis Cervantes also scored team points for the Mustangs with third place finishes in their weight classes. In the 220-weight class, Cervantes broke three school records dating back to 2016. His 670-pound back squat was the second heaviest of the meet. Cervantes also set new school records in total weight (1,645 lbs) and bench press (385 lbs). 

 

In the 242-pound weight class, Lawdermilk broke the school record for total weight with 1,680 pounds. His 705-pound back squat was the second heaviest weight in his division and set a new Mustangs school record. Lawdermilk finished in a three-way tie for first in deadlift after posting a 600-pound lift. 

 

Juniors Connor McCrary and David Haygood and seniors Marc Nino and Josiah Flores represented the Mustangs well during the state meet. Haygood tied the school record for bench in the 123-pound weight class with his 195-pound lift. 

 

Head Coach Eric Pierce was awarded the First Place Coach plaque for Division II.
