Our District
The Andrews Independent School district has a history
of proud achievement in its program of working for educational excellence.
For the past 30 years, the major thrust has
been toward high-quality learning experiences for the students of the community. As a
result, the community enjoys a nation-wide reputation for having one of the outstanding
school systems in the country. The board of trustees
recognizing the diversity of the students of the district, believes that educational
methods should be directed to the maximum possible degree toward an individualized
curriculum providing for the development of each student's potential - intellectual,
physical, emotional, social, and moral. It is further recognized that the total school
experience - teaching, counseling, activity program, and all other - must start where the
student is, not where someone wishes he were.
Andrews High School offers a comprehensive curriculum
including academic studies for the college bound with advanced courses in several areas, a
variety of vocational courses, physical training, and extracurricular activities. The
district participates in Class 4A University Interscholastic League competition.

Our Community
The phase community of quality is more than a catchy slogan to the people of the
West Texas city and county of Andrews. Located in the oil-rich Permian Basin, Andrews
provides one-fourth of the nation's hydrocarbons. The county has produced over two billion
barrels of oil since the 1920s.
In an economy supported by the annual production of over
39 million barrels of oil, more than 2,000 of the county's 5,050 laborers are connected to
the oil industry. Widespread ranching, limited farming, and a diversified industrial base
give essential financial support to provide a desirable quality of life. The town is home
to a plant that assembles Kirby vacuum cleaners and a plant that manufactures fiberglass
tanks.
Andrews County is unique in that it is one of a few Texas
counties that has only one incorporated city within its borders. Over 90 percent of the
county's 15,000 residents live within the city limits of Andrews. With a relatively young
population, the median age of residents is 27.6 years.
The Permian General Hospital, with 14 doctors and 114
hospital beds, serves local patients and patients from adjoining counties in Texas and New
Mexico. Andrews also has an 18-hole golf course, a county-owned and operated airport,
athletic fields and courts, livestock arenas and show barns, and indoor and outdoor
swimming pools.
