INTRODUCTION

Churches and schools have always been a major concern of people in communities everywhere. This book is an attempt to document the existence of the Black school in the Andrews community from 1950 until 1961. Since Lincoln School records were destroyed in the 1965 Devonian fire, the writers of this history have attempted to recreate as much of the school's records and history as possible. The Andrews Independent School District has encouraged the research, writing, and printing of this book since the Lincoln School history was not included in the school district’s history as it appeared in the1978 edition of the Andrews County History. It is the desire of the Andrews Independent School District to honor the Black citizens of Andrews by making sure Lincoln School is included as a vital chapter in the history of this community's school system. Interested community members are encouraged to continue their efforts to add to this first attempt at documenting the Lincoln School history. totop.gif (1403 bytes)

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The Andrews community owes special thanks to Lucious Hubert, Jr. for pursuing a goal he has envisioned for some time. As a former Lincoln School student he wanted to recapture and share memories and preserve the school's history for future generations. His determination and persistence have produced positive results as he achieved his goal.

Lucious enlisted the skills and services of Susan Schulz, then of the Andrews County News, to assist him in the basic research and writing of this history. I appreciate being authorized by school Superintendent Dr. Ervin Huddleston to join forces with Lucious to bring the Lincoln School History Project to fruition.

Thanks to Susan Schulz for her time in helping to research and write the main text of this book. Thanks to Mrs. W. T. Wright, Arlee Jackson, and Jeanette Kelly for sharing photographs and thanks to Wanda Simpson Jones, Lewis Simpson, Hiram Hubert, E. A. Murray, and Lucious Hubert, Jr. for identifying students in the photographs. Thanks to Dr. Robert A. Montgomery for taking the time to provide essential facts concerning the day-to-day operation of Lincoln School. Thanks to Fred Nelson, Al Hays, Juanita Smith, Virginia Callahan, and Max Goldsmith for their comments and help in gathering pertinent facts. Thanks must go to Pauline McDonald for proofreading the manuscript.

Very special thanks must also go to Jan Wallace for her time and effort in editing the materials in this project and for formatting the text and graphics. Special appreciation goes to the Andrews Independent School District for supporting and sponsoring this project from start to finish.
